Letter from the CEO of Express Care

his letter is to inform you of the highest achievement of Express Care on Thursday June 26, 2008, when it received the ‘HONOR OF HOPE AWARD’ from President George W. Bush under the White House’s Faith and Community Based Initiative.  This award was presented at the White House National Conference of Faith and Community Based Initiative held in Washington DC, where President George W. Bush was present joined by members of the President Cabinet, Director Jay Hein and Jedd Meford from OFBCI and more than 1500 public and private sector leaders.

 

One non-profit organization from each state was chosen and among them Express Care was recognized during the National Conference.

 

BACKGROUND:

 

In 2007, Express Care was a recipient of ‘Champion of Compassion Award’ from The White House Faith and Community Based Initiative through the Northern Virginia Workforce Investment Board’s SkillSource.  The program was a success as the participants who enrolled in the Express Care’s Personal Care Assistant Training were empowered and became self-sufficient. After getting certified as Personal Care Assistants they were placed into jobs.  This program is continued and until now 119 students have been graduated Department of Medical Assistance Services and are working in the health care field.

 

As a result of successfully outreaching the community in need, Express Care is the recipient of the following awards and recognitions:

 

 

  • Honor of Hope Award - A White House Faith-Based and Community  Initiative.

  • Champion of Compassion Award - A White House Regional Faith-Based and Community  Initiative through the Northern Virginia Workforce Investment Board’s SkillSource, United States Department of Labor,  (Employment Access through Partnerships and Community Collaboration Project).

  • Mayor’s “Volunteer Appreciation Award”, in recognition of the community service, given by three Herndon Mayors: Mayor Richard C. Thoesen, Mayor Michael O’Reilly and Mayor Steve DeBenedittis, for the year 2003, 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008..

  • Community Service Award, presented by the UNICARE, State Sponsored Program, 2003, in recognition of providing help and support to the immigrant women and children in health related issues, given by the CEO of UNICARE, Mr. John Monahan.

  • Excellence in Achievement Award, given by from National Association of Muslim Women (NAMW), USA

  • Outstanding Community Health Worker in the State of Virginia Award, given by Virginia Community Health Outreach.

  • Service Above Self Award, Herndon Rotary Club.

  • Certificate of Achievement Award, Herndon Rotary Club.

  • Community Service Recognition Award, from CAIR (Council of American Islamic Relations).

The founder and CEO of Express Care, Naila Alam is a survivor of a life-threatening blood disorder ITP, established this non-profit organization in 2003 with the help of Dr. Mohammad Alam and Yasmeen Durrani, in helping those in dire need of medicine, food, doctor’s appointments and training and job placements and health awareness through health seminars and workshops.

 

The most important duty for Express Care is to train low-income individuals and place them into jobs. It has also added computer training and ESL classes taught by teachers speaking different languages, in order to develop workforce in health care and other sectors.

 

Express Care has helped approximately 500 families in need and has trained and placed into jobs nearly 379 individuals.  The goal of this organization is to empower those with limited income so that they can improve their quality by training and job placements. Express Care is a non-profit organization with 501 (c) (3) status.

 

Express Care provides the following services: 

 

1.     Social Services and Emergency Assistance

             •     Assistance in understanding and applying for insurance or alternative healthcare

                    coverage

             •     Translation services

             •     Scheduling of doctor's appointments

             •     Groceries delivered to home-bound, jobless, sick, needy or elderly, and to those

                    requiring short-term immediate support

             •     Visits to the sick and elderly

2.     Healthy Families 2020

             •     Free health screenings for uninsured women

             •     Free physical exams of uninsured children

             •     Free medicine when necessary

3.     Empowerment Through Training

             •     Nursing Training

             •     Personal Care Aide Training

             •     ESL Training

             •     Computer Training

4.     Cure Cancer through Compassion

5.     World Peace Projects

             •     Partnership with Our Future World Foundation

             •     Core Partnership with Global Peace Festival

6.     Care Connection TV Program

             •     Education and connect through our TV program Care Connection

Express Care is a national award winning humanitarian organization that provides information and assistance to those in need, offering a support network that is often lacking. A non-profit organization with 501 (c) (3) status, Express Care is located in Herndon, Virginia. 

 

The aims and objectives of Express Care: 

1.       To provide access to health care

2.       To provide health education, to prevent diseases

3.       To work towards the goal of healthy families 2020

4.       To improve the quality of life of women and children

The aims and goals for the development of our community:

 

At present we are functioning in a very limited capacity, but want to expand our program to outreach as many people as possible worldwide:

  1.  Assess health needs and make referrals to existing programs to ensure that every woman and child has a medical home.

  2. Educate the community through individualized as well as group instructions in preventing measures to improved health and extend the quality of life using television, internet and other means of communication.

  3. Advocating and promoting self-sufficiency through employment, education and economic empowerment for men and women and to provide social support.

  4.  Assisting individuals to understand the cultural practices and to help them in developing skills including language and driving skills that are needed to successfully participate in the society.

The value of Express Care’s mission and the valor of the young woman who chose to live her life for others has also been noted and acknowledged by many in positions of power and public service, including President George W. Bush and First Lady Laura Bush, First Lady of Virginia Lisa Collis, Representative Tom Davis (R-VA), Virginia State Senator Janet Howell, and even Princess Sarah, the Duchess of York and President Musharraf of Pakistan.
